The Best Garlic Craft Is Probably The Garlic Braid

A garlic braid was hung on doors or in the rafters to ward off evil spirits many years ago. Today the uses of braided garlic are more ornamental.

They look so nice hanging in your kitchen. Garlic braids will last for a long time if used as a decoration. However the garlic will dry out, so if you want to use it in your cooking just start at the bottom and take what you need.

Braiding garlic is easy, and it's the perfect way to preserve garlic. A braid typically consists of between ten and twenty cloves of garlic with their stems braided together. It is important to use garlic fresh from the garden with the tops still attached. Rinse the plants off, and choose the fullest heads for a better-looking braid. You can use smaller heads when you start the braid and then gradually get bigger.

garlic braid Gather together three garlic bulbs. Tie the stems together securely with twine. Begin braiding the stems like you would a three-section hair plait. Braid tightly so that the leaves don’t show in between. After making several braids, work in more bulbs and space them out evenly. You’ll include their stems with the first stems that you started with. No one stem will extend for the entire length of the braid.

Continue in this manner until you have the length that you want. I usually start out with three bulbs but space them so that I have one bulb at the bottom and then work up to the top.

Use the twine to make a hook at the end of the braid for hanging. Hang the garlic braid to dry.

To make the garlic braid really special for a gift, I glue dried flowers at the top and add a pretty country bow, or a color to match their decor.
