Wash Cross Stitch

If you want to wash cross stitch be sure that it needs it. It may need some cleaning before it’s displayed or given as a gift.

Before you clean your cross stitch, be sure that it really does need to be cleaned. If you are careful when you did your design, it might be fine as it is.

I know that some of my cross stitch was just fine when I finished but there have been times when some of them did need cleaning. When my children were still at home sometimes they would get a hold of mine and then I had to wash it when it was done.

Things You Will Need to Wash Your Cross Stitch

  • Clean white towel
  • Ironing board
  • Iron
  • Cold or lukewarm water
  • Mild dish soap, avoid ones with fragrances or softeners

Instructions For Washing Your Cross Stitch

Hand wash cross stitch in cold or lukewarm water with a very small of amount of soap. Do not scrub! Rinse in cold or lukewarm water but do not wring. You may need to rinse 2 or 3 times to make sure you get the soap out. That is why you don’t want to use to much soap.

Now roll the wet piece in a clean white towel. Gently press on the rolled up towel to remove the water. Unroll the towel and repeat on a dry section of the towel, or use another clean towel. Remove all the water that you can.

Lay it face up on a clean towel and let rest until it is just slightly damp. Now place it face down on a dry towel and use an iron set at a low to medium setting and lightly press the back of the cross stitch. Never use steam!

You are now ready to frame or mount your work as desired and enjoy your needlework.

If you have any questions or cross stitch ideas please contact me and I will add it to my site.
