Clay Pot Craft Ideas Made With Terra Cotta Pots

There are so many clay pot craft ideas that you could fill a book. In this day of arts and crafts, clay pots have really come of age. Terra cotta pots are so much fun to work with because you can do just about anything with them, plus, the more you make the more ideas you will get!

You can make clay pot birdbaths, bird feeders, small animals and people, candy dishes, and many more things. You can even make gift baskets, bells, chimes, decorative containers, candle holders and whatever your imagination can come up with. I love to paint my terra cotta pots with flowers or birds. The plants in them look so nice but most of the time people just look at the pots.

Seal A Clay Pot

The main thing you will have to remember is that if you are going to plant in the pot you need to put a finish on the inside. Seal the INSIDE with oil or water based polyurethane with 2 or 3 coats and let dry. Either of these will work but oil based polyurethane will last longer.

For decorative pots that will not be used for plants, seal the INSIDE with a water-based polyurethane or craft acrylic sealant. It cleans up a lot easier than the oil base.

You can decorate them with paint, markers or even rubber stamps. I have added details to my terra cotta pots by using rub-on decals, which work great. You can also use stencils or even shaped sponges. Just about any embellish will work. Try felt, pipe cleaners, buttons, feathers, dried flowers or even pompoms. Little wooden cut outs that you get at craft stores look great on the pots but be sure that you get little ones. Otherwise they won't work because of the shape of the pot.

All of these clay pot craft ideas are easy to do. As you try to figure out what to make with your terra cotta pot, keep in mind that the clay pot crafts aren’t just for planting flowers anymore. They make perfect gifts for someone special and you could even personalize the pots for them.
